Mostly Void Stuff is a side project I started that incorporates blues folk, blues country, country folk - whatever you want to call it - with noise. Old American music was part of my life growing up, as was noise, and the combination of the two became a personal side project that is now in its sixth release.

I know it is for a small audience because most fall into one camp or the other but hopefully there are enough people that will enjoy the notation of blues and also enjoy the improvisation and power of noise placed beside each other. I find it very affirming. it's also very much the sound of a younger me and an older me dually.

With this album I wanted to refine the elements into a purer form than on previous releases. I think there are hints of this on Hellhound, I think there are hints of it on Cowboys but on this album it is stripped down so you can very clearly hear the two elements together. That was the main aim. It is very evident on the primary track. The second track, Mostly, is deliberately, like violence, more of a grey area.

The title comes from the feeling of reaching a purer form too.
At some point in your life you will encounter violence against yourself or another and the kind of person you are dictates how this violence emotionally touches you, how you react to the situation, or even how you physically retaliate. We are taught not to be violent and we are told to walk away but violence is not necessarily completely negative and there have certainly been moments in my life when I have been violent.
In these moments there was also a purity and a stillness. I know confrontation between people looks ugly from the outside but when you're inside it and you're caught in the violence there is almost a calm centre - a refining of everything that needs to be done into two sides: the side of will you live, or survive, or get away and the side of will you die, or get hurt, or be stopped. In a way that refinement becomes a new state - both of these sides exiting simultaneously - a little like quantum theory. That state of two individual directions existing at once is what I wanted to reflect with the blues and the noise. Which side is which, much like our relationship with violence, is entirely up the individual.

That's the origin of both the title and the music for Mostly, I am not a violent man, mostly by, appropriately, Mostly Void Stuff.
